Correct use of thermal pads

2023-09-27

Thermal conductive gaskets, also known as thermally conductive silicone sheets, are mainly used for the transfer interface between electronic equipment and heat sinks or product shells. They have good viscosity, flexibility, compressibility and excellent thermal conductivity, allowing them to fully utilize electronic originals during use. The air between the heat sink and the heat sink is exhausted to achieve sufficient contact and the heat dissipation effect is significantly improved. The operation process of the thermal pad is relatively simple, but there are a few points that need to be paid attention to. A little carelessness may damage the heat dissipation function of the silicone sheet. Today I will mainly talk about the correct use of thermal pads.

1. Keep the contact surface between electronic components and thermal pads clean and avoid dirt on the surface of electronic components. Any stains on the contact surface will cause the self-adhesiveness and sealing thermal conductivity of the thermal pad to deteriorate.

2. When picking up a thermal pad, the one with a large area should be picked up from the middle, because if a large thermal pad is picked up from the edge, it is easy to receive uneven force, causing the thermal pad to deform, affecting subsequent operations and even Will damage the silicone sheet. There are no requirements for sheets with smaller areas.

3. Hold the thermal pad with your left hand and tear off one of the protective films with your right hand. When using, remember not to tear off both sides of the protective film at the same time, and minimize the number and area of direct contact with the thermal pad to maintain the self-adhesiveness and thermal conductivity of the thermal pad from damage.

4. After peeling off the protective film, first align the heat sink toward the electronic components to be pasted, slowly put down the thermal pad, and use a flat piece of film to push it from left to right to avoid the generation of air bubbles in the middle.

5. If bubbles are generated during operation, you can pull up one end of the thermal pad and repeat the above steps, or use a hard plastic sheet to gently wipe away the bubbles. Do not use too much force to avoid damage to the thermal pad.

6. Tear off the other side of the protective film, then align it and put it into the radiator. When tearing off the protective film, be gentle to avoid strain or bubbles.

7. After the thermal pad is attached, apply a certain amount of pressure to the radiator and store it for a period of time to ensure that the thermal pad is firmly fixed.

The above is the correct way to use thermal pads. Each step requires us to operate with caution. If you have other questions about adhesives, you can feedback your problems and confusions to TENSAN by leaving a message.
