Many users only pay attention to radiators and fans when purchasing heat dissipation materials, but a very important thing-heat dissipation often been ignored--- thermal grease. In many cases, it is easy to confuse thermal grease and thermal silicone. Although thermal grease and thermal silicone are only literally different, and they are both thermally conductive materials, their characteristics are so different. In case of improper use, the consequences are very serious.

Thermal grease is used for lubrication and can be applied under high load. The appearance is similar to big butter,and we usually call it “thermal grease” or call it thermal paste,which element is silicone oil + filler. The filler is very finely ground powder, and its composition is ZnO / Al2O3 / boron nitride / silicon carbide / aluminum powder. Silicone oil ensures a certain fluidity, while the filler fills the tiny gap between the CPU and the heat sink, ensuring thermal conductivity. Because silicone oil has low sensitivity to temperature, it does not become thick at low temperature, it will not become thin at high temperature, and it is not volatile, so it can be used for a long time. Nowadays, some high-grade thermal greases use silver powder or aluminum powder as filler, which utilizes the high thermal conductivity of metals.

Thermal silicone:

Silicone is a kind of silicone rubber, which is a single-component room temperature vulcanized liquid rubber. Once exposed to air, the silane monomers in them condense to form a network structure, the system is cross-linked, can not be melted and dissolved, elastic, into a rubber state, while bonding objects. Its thermal conductivity is slightly higher than ordinary rubber, but it is much lower than thermal grease, and once cured, it is difficult to separate the bonded objects, generally only used in graphics cards, memory heat sinks. If it is used on the CPU, it will cause overheating, and it is difficult to remove the heat sink. Pulling it down may damage the CPU or CPU socket directly. And if you pull the silicone heat sink with graphics card, you may pull the display chip from the PCB.
