The correct way to use thermal pad

2022-04-22

Thermal pad, also known as thermally conductive silicone film, are mainly used as a transfer interface between electronic devices and heat sinks or product housings. They have good adhesion, flexibility, compressibility and excellent thermal conductivity, making it possible to completely expel the air between the electronic original and the heat sink in use, in order to achieve full contact and a significant increase in heat dissipation. Thermal conductivity gasket operation process is relatively simple, but also several points need to be noted, a little carelessness may damage the heat dissipation function of the silicone film. Today, I will mainly talk about the correct use of thermal conductive gaskets.

  • Keep the contact surface of the electronic parts and the thermal gasket clean and avoid the presence of dirt on the surface of the electronic parts, any stains on the contact surface will lead to poor self-adhesion and thermal conductivity of the thermal pad.
  • Secondly, when going to pick up the thermal conductive gaskets, those with large area should be picked up from the middle part, as large thermal conductive gaskets are prone to uneven force if picked up from the edge part, which will lead to deformation of the thermal conductive gaskets and affect the subsequent operation or even damage the silicone film. Smaller sheets are not required.
  • Thirdly, carry the thermal conductivity gasket in your left hand and peel off one side of the protective film with your right hand. Keep in mind not to remove both sides of the protective film at the same time and to minimize the number and area of direct contact with the thermal gasket in order to keep the self-adhesive and thermal conductivity of the gasket from being damaged.
  • After tearing off the protective film, first align the heat sink towards the electronic part to be pasted, slowly lower the thermal gasket and use a flat film to push it from left to right to avoid the creation of air bubbles in the middle.
  • Finally, air bubbles are generated during the operation, pull up the end of the thermal gasket and repeat the above steps, or borrow a hard plastic sheet to gently wipe away the air bubbles, without excessive force to avoid damage to the thermal gasket.

The above is the correct way to use the thermal gasket, each step of which requires careful operation. If you have any other questions regarding adhesives, you can send your questions and confusion to TENSAN by leaving a message.
