Popularization of basic knowledge of thermal paste

2023-08-21

Heat dissipation paste, also often called heat conduction silicone grease, is a paste made of special silicone oil as base oil, new metal oxide as filler, and various functional additives, processed by a specific process. Colors have different appearances due to different materials. It has good thermal conductivity, temperature resistance, insulation and other properties. It is an ideal dielectric material for heat-resistant devices, and its chemical properties are stable. During use, it will not produce corrosive gases and will not affect the metals it contacts.

Application purpose

The heat source is in direct contact with the radiator, and a high gradient temperature difference is formed at the joint. Even if the surface is polished, it is impossible to achieve full physical contact between the two surfaces. If the heat conduction material is filled in it, it can be seen that it effectively reduces the temperature difference between the heat source and the heat sink.

Application principle

The heat conduction principle of thermal paste is to fill the gap between the CPU and the heat sink, so that the two can fully contact, and the electrical appliances are more conducive to heat transfer during the working process. Therefore, the use of thermal paste should not be too thick. Too thick silicone grease layer hinders the transfer of heat energy, which is not conducive to the rapid transfer of heat.

Use operation

1. Put a small amount of thermal paste in the center of the CPU shell. The device used to operate the thermal paste is not necessarily a needle tube, it may also be a small bottle. You can use a toothpick to pick a small amount of thermal paste and place it in the same position.

2. Use a small cardboard or a scraper to scrape the heat dissipation paste evenly on the cpu shell and spread it into a thin layer.

3. After spreading evenly, it can be seen that the CPU metal shell is under a thin layer of silicone grease. Use a cotton swab or another piece of clean cardboard or plastic to scrape off the overflowing silicone grease from the edge of the CPU shell and clean it.

Precautions

1. Do not use fingers to apply thermal paste, but use finger cots;

2. Before use, first confirm that there are no foreign objects on the surface of the radiator base and the CPU core, and then gently place the radiator on the CPU;

3. After placing the heat sink on the CPU, do not rotate or translate the heat sink, otherwise it may cause uneven thickness of thermal grease between the heat sink and CPU;

4. In terms of storage, do not put it in a place exposed to direct sunlight, but put it in a cool and ventilated place. After opening the seal, try to use it up at one time. If there is any leftover, it must be sealed and stored;
