Do thermally conductive silicone greases conduct electricity?

2022-04-28

In our often used LED, small appliances, high-power lights and so on above the high-temperature thermal conductive silicone grease will conduct electricity? In fact, this customer should be an expert, the first correct answer is "thermal grease is not conductive". Thermal grease is a highly thermally conductive and insulating silicone material.

As silicone is insulating, insulating things are definitely not conductive, we can think about the computers, TVs, mobile phones, chargers, LED lights and other electrical products that are used in our daily lives are good thermal conductive silicone, which are insulating, if they are conductive, we must be dangerous to use. The product test report, the material safety material, so that we have to use up also have to rest assured.Don't just buy some cheap products, but pick the right product with reasonable price.

Thermal conductive silicone paste is a kind of high thermal conductive insulating silicone material, which simply never cures and can be used at a temperature of -50℃ to +230℃ for a long time to maintain the grease paste state. It has both excellent electrical insulation and thermal conductivity, together with low oil separation (tends to zero), high and low temperature resistance, water resistance, ozone resistance and weather aging resistance. It can be widely coated on the contact surface between heat generators (power tubes, thyristors, electric heat stacks, etc.) and heat dissipation equipment (heat sinks, heat sinks, shells, etc.) in various electronic products and electrical equipment to act as a heat transfer medium and to prevent moisture, dust, corrosion and vibration. It is used for the thermal conductivity and heat dissipation of power amplifiers, transistors, electronic tubes, CPUs and other electronic original equipment, thus ensuring the stability of the electrical functions of electronic instruments and meters.

Thermal conductive silicone is based on the general silicone adhesive with a certain amount of thermally conductive filler powder to achieve thermal conductivity. Whether the thermal conductivity is maintained along with the insulation depends on the type and characteristics of the thermally conductive filling powder chosen by the manufacturer. As a thermally conductive material, manufacturers generally use cheaper metal oxide particles as a thermally conductive material to increase, and some metal oxides will conduct electricity while conducting heat.

General silicone binder insulation strength (indicating insulation function) can arrive at more than 20KV/mm, if the increase of the thermal conductive raw materials is not reasonable, will lead to thermal conductive adhesiveinsulation strength below 8KV/mm. Usually, electronic products only need insulation ability higher than 3kv/mm (DC circuit part) is not much problem. However, in some demanding situations, such as wet, high heat and confined gas conditions, the insulation strength of the circuit is required to be considerably higher.
